La Picona Nicaragua

REGION: Nueva Segovia
COUNTRY: Nicaragua
PRODUCER: Olga Marina Gonzalez
ALTITUDE: 1350 masl
VARIETIES: Maracaturra

Think: Pomegranate with hints of cinnamon; silky body and apple acidity.

We here at Commonplace are sort of crazy about subvarieties related to the fabled Maragogype, often referred to as “elephant bean.” Most often, we’ve had the Pacamara variety, which is a cross between Maragogype and Pacas (a mutation native to El Salvador). While we may still bring some in later his year, we couldn’t pass up a chance to get our hands on some Maracaturra we were offered by our friends at Punta Cafe. A cross between Maragogype and the more common Caturra, which is a Bourbon sub-variety. Expect a milder body but loads of sweetness in this cup from Olga Marina Gonzalez and her son Salatiel Zabala from their farm La Picona. They’ve won 4th place in the 2009 Cup of Excellence (CoE) and 2nd place in the 2015 CoE which is no mean feat. Begun in Brazil in 1999 and now organized under the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, the CoE is the most rigorous, competitive, and potentially lucrative competition for coffees in the Americas. Much like winning any award, performing well in the juried competition and then in the auctions can command a certain respect in the future, which can lead to higher prices in the long run. We really think you’ll like this one!
